Re: [Handle-info] personal DOI-like service?

So, this is not only a good question, but also a question that has been asked off-and-on since DOI early days!

The question is not simply about having a personal, maintainable persistent URL service; that could be achieved using HS (if the individual is knowledgeable), PURL, or if maintainability is not required, tinyurl.

The question is more about having a DSpace-like virtual repository service: the persistent maintainable URL is one aspect, but a presentation of descriptive information, etc, etc is also part of it.

There are some near solutions; for example,
http://demo.openrepository.com/ could potentially solve the problem. The trouble is that OR is based on DSpace, which persists real assets, not links. Also, OR is not free (although a three-month free trial is available).

What is really needed is something like an AJAX front end on HS that would render MD stuff into a HDL record; user fills out the HDL record with all of the MD listed below and could maintain as required.

Hi guys,

I came across Handle as I was looking for a service like the one DOI
provides but geared for individuals. In short I am looking for a
solution that address the problem of link rot in academic publication
references. "Handle" provides the basic solution to handle this.
However, I have not come across any software that implements a similar
solution that I can use out of the box.

If you know of anything that fits my bill, please help me by pointing
me in the rigth direction.

In more detail:
What I am looking for is something that works like this. Users are
allowed access to a login-protected page where they can add details of
digital objects (papers/reports/software page in my case) including
the meta-data like authors, title etc. and a link to the digital
version of their object. Once this is submitted, the system provides a
long-lived permanent URL to that resource details, which can be passed
on to others and referenced in publications etc. When a user surfs to
that URL, he is presented with the details of the object as well as
the latest link to object. Thus if the author has to change the
location of the object (say from his Univ hosted website to his
personal page), he can log into the system and just update the URL.

Srijith
