Subject: New handle software and license
Dear Handle users:
CNRI has released a new version of the handle server software which, among
other improvements, has a public license which licenses CNRI's Handle
System technology. This new Handle System Public License (see
http//hdl.handle.net/4263537/5030) is an important step in Handle System
evolution. It will allow commercial use of the technology, and the
reference implementation of the HANDLE.NET 6.2 software, on an open source
basis. It will also allow the software to be freely embedded in other
systems and products. For providers of identifier and/or resolution
services, there is also an associated service agreement and a small fee
for registration to help offset the costs of running the Global Handle
Registry and the common proxy server system (hdl.handle.net).
Continued use of the server software (version 5.3.4 and prior versions)
and assigned prefixes for current handle system users will be unaffected
and so existing users need do nothing at this time. However, if they wish
to upgrade to the new version of the software they will have to register
and follow the new procedures.
In addition, this mail list (handle-dev) will be discontinued. If you wish
to be kept apprised of handle system developments and news please
subscribe to handle-info at

Please go to the newly redesigned handle web site for further information:

If you have any questions please let me know.
Thank you for your continued support of CNRI's Handle System.
